๐ฌ For the Newbies, Burned-Out, the Ghosted Accounts, and the Brave Re-Starters ๐๐ตโ๐ซ๐ป๐

Aloha! I’m sending you sunshine and sequins from Hawaiสปi! ๐๏ธ๐งต
E komo mai, friend! ๐ Iโm Liz, the chaotic gremlin behind Leaping Lizard Cosplay โ crafter of foam, wrangler of wigs, and writer of the Cositivity series: a collection of resources to help cosplayers navigate the weird, wonderful world of content creation with more heart and less burnout. If you’re a new creator, someone returning after a long break, or just totally overwhelmed by the algorithm, you’re in the right place.
Letโs be real for a sec: social media is not natural.
Likeโฆ emotionally confusing, soul-warping, algorithm-chasing weird. ๐ตโ๐ซ
This quick guide isnโt meant to make you go viral.
Itโs not about being the biggest name in cosplay.
Itโs just here to help you figure out where to start sharing your journey, in a way that feels intentional, joyful, and sustainable. ๐
Because this isnโt a race. ๐ข๐
Itโs not a competition. ๐
Everyoneโs path is different, and growth โ real growth โ looks different for every cosplayer, every creator, every single human.
So before we dive into tips and tricks, I want you to remember this:
๐ Be proud of every single post you write.
๐งต Be proud that youโre putting yourself out there.
๐ฆ Be proud that youโre brave enough to try.
๐ฌ A Personal Story: Social Media Broke My Brain (But Iโm Still Here)๐ง
When I first started sharing cosplay content, I was winging it.
No strategy. No schedule. Some posts blew up. Others? Radio silence. I had no idea what made the difference. ๐๐ One week, I was riding a trending wave Hawaiian Roller Coaster style ๐โโ๏ธ, and the next, Iโd post something I worked on for months only to have it get ghosted by the algorithm like an awkward date. ๐ป
And the platforms? Ohhhh boy…
Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, Twitter (X?), YouTube, Vine (RIP ๐), Tumblr, Snapchat, Pinterest, Discordโฆ I swear, they multiply like Tribbles! (Where are my trekkies at?) Each one had its own vibe, its own secret algorithm cult, and its own bizarre expectations of what โgoodโ content looked like. ๐ฒ๐
There was a time when I felt like I was supposed to be five different people. I didnโt change who I was, but the pressure to perform in different ways was exhausting. And honestly? It messed with my head. ๐ The numbers. The pressure. The mental gymnastics of trying to stay โrelevant.โ That creeping doubt that I wasnโt doing enoughโฆ or that maybe I wasnโt enough.
And then it happened.
๐ I hit 30,000 followers on Facebook.
And instead of popping champagne, I panicked. Like, panic attack in my craft room because I leave in hours for a con levels of panic. My heart raced. I actually cried because it happened so quickly. It was like suddenly, people were watching, and I had no idea what they wanted or what I was supposed to give them.
It scared the ๐งป right out of me. AND I’M A EXTROVERT…
I started asking myself the scary stuff:
- โAm I even good enough?โ
- โWhat if I mess up?โ
- โWhat if I say the wrong thing and everyone turns on me?โ
- โWhat if this is all just a fluke?โ
And to make it more confusing, my other social media? Didnโt match the growth. Not even close. It made me question everything. I didnโt realize that sometimes you just perform better on one platform than another, and thatโs normal. But back then, it felt like a sign I was doing something wrong.
I still struggle sometimes. ๐ I still wonder if a post โfloppingโ means Iโm flopping.
But Iโve also learned, slowly, painfully, stubbornly, that those numbers? They donโt define me. And they donโt define you either. ๐๐ฆ
๐ ๏ธ And If Youโve Burned Out? Or never Got Traction? Read This.
Maybe you stopped posting months ago.
Maybe you poured your heart into content and got silence.
Maybe youโve tried everything and it still feels like youโre shouting into the void.
Listen, that doesnโt mean you failed.
It means you’re human.
And honestly? Social media isnโt always built for humans. Itโs built for eyeballs and engagement and never-ending scroll. So if you hit a wall, creatively, emotionally, or just existentially, thatโs not a flaw. Thatโs proof you care enough to need rest.
Hereโs some truth for you, in case no oneโs said it lately:
๐งฏ If youโre burned out:
- You donโt owe the algorithm an explanation.
- Youโre allowed to take breaks, long ones, weird ones, quiet ones.
- Start back with something low-stakes. A silly post. A WIP. A meme. Let it feel fun again.
- You donโt need a full rebrand. You donโt need a strategy. You just need to take the first step back, for you.
๐ง If youโve felt invisible:
- Itโs not always about quality. Sometimes your audience just hasnโt found you yet.
- Different platforms behave differently, and sometimes, one just vibes with your style more than others.
- Slow growth is still growth. Small reach still reaches someone, and sometimes, that someone needed it.
๐ฑ If youโre starting over:
- You are not behind. Youโre at a restart point, and thatโs powerful.
- Archive what you donโt love. Refresh your bio. Post a little โhey, Iโm backโ intro.
- Let people into your journey. People connect with honesty, not polish.
Social media rewards consistency, but more than that, it rewards authenticity.
So whether youโre rebuilding, returning, or just reevaluatingโฆ you still belong here. ๐
If your dream is to be a professional content creator, I wonโt lie to you:
Youโre going to need a thick skin. ๐ก๏ธ
Youโll need to get comfortable critiquing yourself. ๐ง
Not from a place of self-loathing, but from a place of growth.
Youโll need to constantly evolve your content, learn new skills, and keep showing up. Eeven when the numbers donโt. Even when people donโt “get it.” Even when youโre not sure you do.
But hereโs the secret no one tells you:
โจ Social media doesnโt define your worth.
โจ Popularity doesnโt equal passion.
โจ And no algorithm knows how badass your personality and content is better than you do.
So whether youโre here to grow, to help teach, to connect, or just to document the chaos of your craft, youโre in the right place. ๐
Letโs talk about content creation.
Letโs make it intentional.
Letโs make it fun.
Letโs make it yours.
And maybe โ just maybe โ letโs make it a little chaotic too. ๐ฆ๐
โจ 1. Find Your Why
Before you dive into videos or photos, ask yourself:
Why are you doing this?
Because your โwhyโ is what keeps you grounded, especially when growth looks different for every person putting their passion and personality out into the void. โจ๐ฒ
Some questions to ask yourself:
๐ Are you sharing your love for a fandom thatโs changed your life?
๐ญ Are you here to be an entertainer?
๐งก Do you want to build a community of supportive, like-minded chaos gremlins?
๐๏ธ Are you aiming to get brand deals or make money selling products and turn your hobby into a side hustle (or full-time gig)?
๐ Do you want to document your work for your own memory โ or to help others learn from your process?
Your answer can be one of these. Or all of them. Or something totally different. Whatever it is, own it.
Because hereโs the truth:
The clearer you are about your purpose, the easier it is to decide what to post, where to post it, and how to talk about it.
It also makes the tough days a little easier, the days when your post doesnโt perform well, or your video flops, or someone drops an unnecessary comment. ๐ฉ
If your โwhyโ is strong, youโll keep going, not because of numbers, but because youโre doing something that matters to you.
Youโre not just a content machine.
Youโre a creator. A builder. A storyteller. An artist. ๐ ๏ธ๐ซ
So get quiet for a moment.
Ask yourself:
๐ง What excites me most about sharing my journey?
๐ฃ What kind of connection do I want to build with people who see my content?
๐งญ What kind of creator do I want to become in the long run?
Write it down. Stick it to your wall.
Come back to it on the hard days.
That โwhyโ is going to keep you grounded when the algorithm doesnโt. ๐
๐ฌNote for those returning:
Your โwhyโ might have changed since you last posted, and thatโs not only okay, itโs healthy. Maybe now itโs about finding your love for cosplay again. Or reconnecting without pressure. Start with what feels honest right now. Let that guide you forward.
๐ฑ 2. Pick Your Platforms
So, youโve found your โwhy,โ now letโs figure out where to show up.
In todayโs content landscape, it can feel like there are a billion platforms shouting โPost here! No, here! Wait, change the aspect ratio!โ ๐ตโ๐ซ
Hereโs the truth:
Not every platform is right for every creator.
And you do not have to be everywhere to be successful. (I’d recommend though, having at least three, you can at least cross post on. )
Start with a few that feel fun and manageable. This isnโt a race. Itโs a long-term build. ๐งฑโจ
Letโs break it down, platform by platform:
๐งญ Returner Tip:
You donโt have to rejoin every platform you used before. Let go of the ones that made you feel drained or defeated. Start fresh somewhere new, or return to the one place that still feels like home. One platform is a good start. One post is enough.
๐ธ Instagram โ Your Highlight Reel
Best for: Aesthetic photos, reels, behind-the-scenes stories, WIP shots, announcements, and artist portfolios
Vibe: Curated chaos meets personal brand sparkle โจ
Strengths:
- Great for showcasing your work, style, or niche in a visual way
- Tags and DMs help you connect with other creators, brands, and events
- Reels can boost reach without needing a massive follower count
- Stories let you casually check in, share process, or talk to your audience without overthinking
Watch out for:
Grid perfectionism, algorithm mood swings, and the pressure to always โbe on brand.โ
Instagram is a powerful tool, but donโt let it turn into a performance trap. ๐ผ๏ธ๐ฉ
Whether you’re sharing your latest artwork, outfit, photoshoot, gaming clip, or mini tutorial, this is your gallery. Make it pretty or messy. Just make it yours.
๐ต TikTok โ Your Creative Playground
Best for: Fast, funny, weird, wonderful content โ from tutorials and transitions to skits, storytelling, memes, and mini vlogs
Vibe: Raw, relatable, chaotic good energy. โจ Itโs the Wild West of creativity.
Strengths:
- Massive discovery potential, you can go viral with 3 followers and no fancy setup
- Ideal for transformations, quick tips, relatable humor, or aesthetic builds
- Encourages authenticity, personality, and low-stakes experimentation
- Great for both niche communities and wide reach
Watch out for:
Trend fatigue, algorithm whiplash, and feeling pressure to post constantly. Also, donโt chase what doesnโt feel like you.
Be weird. Be specific. Be your unhinged little creative self. ๐งช๐ฆ
๐บ YouTube โ Your Theater Stage
Best for: Long-form content, tutorials, vlogs, build logs, reviews, commentary, storytime, deep dives, and creative showcases
Vibe: Educational meets cinematic โ a place for stories, skills, and substance. People come here to learn, feel, or be entertained.
Strengths:
- Excellent for storytelling, teaching, and building authority
- Content has long shelf life โ videos can gain views for months or years
- Monetization options: ads, memberships, super chats, and sponsorships
- Great search engine visibility (YouTube is the second biggest search engine!)
Watch out for:
Editing burnout, perfectionism spirals, imposter syndrome, and the time it takes to grow โ itโs a marathon, not a sprint. ๐ฌ
Whether you’re breaking down your process, performing, or documenting your passion project โ YouTube is the stage where your content can really shine.
๐ฎ Twitch/Kick/Youtube Livestreamingโ Your Live Creative Studio
Best for: Gaming, digital or traditional art, chatting, music, cosplay builds, tutorials, or just sharing your vibe while you work
Vibe: Cozy hangouts, real-time connection, a space where people show up for you
Strengths:
- Builds a loyal community through live interaction
- Lets people see your process in real time โ messy, funny, or magical
- Great place to be imperfect, unscripted, and authentically you
Watch out for: Long stream hours, burnout from always being “on,” a learning curve with tech/setup, and occasional trolls in the chat ๐
Whether you’re painting, gaming, sewing, or just vibing, live streaming can become your virtual studio where followers feel like theyโre pulling up a chair to hang out.
๐ฆ Twitter/X & Threads โ Your Microphone
Best for: Quick updates, hot takes, memes, mini rants, WIPs, behind-the-scenes moments, and real-time reactions
Vibe: Brain-dump central. Less polished, more personal. Itโs your public diaryโฆ with an audience.
Strengths:
- Perfect for real-time thoughts, threads, or quick project updates
- Easy to connect through hashtags, replies, and trending topics
- Low-effort, low-barrier โ just say the thing and hit post
- Great for building personality and staying top-of-mind
Watch out for:
Doomscrolling, drama cycles, burnout from overposting, and thinking you have to say something daily. Sometimes, silence is strategy. ๐
Whether you’re live-tweeting a build, sharing your latest fan art, or screaming into the digital void about deadlines, these platforms can amplify your voice, just donโt let it drown you.
๐ฅ Facebook โ Your Digital Bulletin Board
Best for: Community building, group discussions, local networking, event promotion, and long-form photo posts.
Vibe: Old-school but still kicking. More useful than you think โ especially for niche communities and real-life connections.
Strengths:
- Still active in many international and hobby-specific circles (yes, even cosplay and crafting!)
- Great for finding or creating groups based on your content niche
- Solid platform for promoting events, workshops, meetups, or streams
- Lets you share full photo albums, longer captions, and links without the algorithm tanking your reach
Watch out for:
Low engagement outside of groups, algorithm weirdness, and occasionally… the comments section. ๐ฌ
But used strategically, Facebook can still be a powerful part of your creative toolkit โ especially for local or IRL community presence.
โ Ko-fi / Patreon โ Your Creator Tip Jar (and More)
These platforms let your audience support you directly. No middlemen, no ads, just you and your people.
Vibe: Cozy creator corner meets exclusive club. Like a behind-the-scenes greenroom for your biggest fans. ๐โจ
Perfect for offering:
- Behind-the-scenes updates
- Early-access content
- Digital downloads (patterns, art, printables, etc.)
- Exclusive tutorials, bonus videos, or monthly goodies
๐ Itโs a way to turn your most loyal followers into true patrons of your work. Whether youโre an artist, crafter, cosplayer, writer, gamer, or chaotic creative mashup of all the above.
Iโll go deeper into content monetization in another article, but just know this:
These platforms work, especially when paired with transparency, consistency, and community.
People want to support creators they care about. Give them a way to do that, and show them it matters.
๐ค Discord โ Your Cozy Digital Hangout
Best for: Building deeper community, hosting chill convos, sharing exclusive updates, doing Q&As, or running member events like build nights or watch parties.
Vibe: Private clubhouse energy. A mix of group chat, group hug, and organized chaos. ๐๏ธโจ
Strengths:
- Great for connecting with your audience off the algorithm
- You can create different channels for builds, feedback, memes, mental health, etc.
- Perfect space for community bonding โ especially for recurring supporters or followers who want more interaction
- Offers roles, private rooms, and integrations with Ko-fi/Patreon to reward supporters
Watch out for:
Moderation burnout, notification overload, and dead server energy if left unengaged. ๐ซ
Like a houseplant, Discord thrives on regular check-ins and a bit of watering (aka conversation starters).
๐ Bonus tip: Use it for yourself too, as a low-pressure place to share progress, vent, or vibe with people who actually get your chaos.
๐ Pinterest โ Your Visual Filing Cabinet (That Markets for You)
Perfect for pinning your finished looks, linking tutorials, sharing resources, or organizing visual inspiration boards โ from costume design to color palettes, recipes, art prompts, or reference photos.
Vibe: Visual search engine meets personal mood board.

- Evergreen reach, pins can resurface months (even years) later
- Great for directing traffic to your website, shop, blog, or tutorials
- A powerful tool for discovery and inspiration, not just for your audience, but for you too
- Easy to organize your work and ideas into boards people can follow and share
๐โจ Bonus: Unlike fast-scrolling platforms, Pinterest is calm, intentional, and designed for planning, making it ideal for creators who love visual storytelling and long-term growth.
๐ป Snapchat โ Your Unfiltered Story Stream
Best for: Behind-the-scenes chaos, raw updates, quick peeks, and real-life moments that disappear before you overthink them.
Vibe: Casual, fleeting, and very โyou had to be there.โ Perfect for off-the-cuff creativity. ๐ฌโจ
Strengths:
- Great for authentic, low-stakes connection with your audience
- Disappearing content = less pressure to be polished
- Fun filters, AR effects, and private story options for close followers
- Can be used to cross-post Reels or TikToks in bite-sized, personal ways
Watch out for:
Limited discoverability unless youโre already big on the platform, and audience attention span here is lightning fast โก
๐ Best used as a “soft content lab.” Try ideas here before bringing them to other platforms.
๐ Your Own Website โ Your Digital Home Base
Yes, you should absolutely have one, and hey, youโre literally reading this guide on mine. ๐ฅ๏ธ๐
A personal website is your online headquarters. The one platform you fully control. No algorithm, no weird glitches, no sudden rule changes. Just you, your content, and a clean space to showcase it.
Think of it as your creative HQ, a central place where people can always find you, even if a social media platform implodes (RIP Vine, Tumblrโs prime era, and Xangaโฆ #eldermillennialVibes).
Your site can feature:
๐ธ A portfolio of your work (cosplay, art, video, writing)
๐ All your socials, shop links, and promo pages in one place
๐๏ธ A storefront for prints, patterns, commissions, or products
โ๏ธ A blog for tutorials, build logs, thoughts, or personal updates
๐ฉ A contact form for bookings, brand deals, or collaborations
Even a simple homepage signals professionalism and long-term intent.
๐ก TL;DR: Own your name. Own your content. Own your corner of the internet.
It’s not about perfection, itโs about planting your flag. โจ
๐งญ Your Strategy: Start Small, Grow Smart
You donโt need to go all-in on every platform. That way lies burnout and frustration.
Start with two or three that match your energy and your content style.
Ask yourself:
- ๐ Where do I enjoy spending time as a user?
- ๐ง What type of content comes naturally to me?
- ๐ญ Do I want to entertain, educate, or document?
Cross-post when it makes sense, adapt your tone per platform, and keep your Linktree (or Carrd, or Beacons) updated so people can find all your stuff in one click.
๐ Learn the Basics (Just a Little)
You donโt need to become a marketing wizard, but understanding a bit about analytics and search engine optimization (SEO) can help your content work smarter.
- Learn what kind of content performs well on each platform (Reels vs. carousels vs. captions, etc.)
- Pay attention to insights like reach, saves, watch time, or click-through rate, not just likes
- Use searchable keywords in your captions, titles, and even filenames (yes, that matters!)
- On platforms like YouTube or Pinterest, learning basic SEO will make a huge difference in discoverability
This doesnโt mean chasing trends or becoming a slave to stats, just learning how to help the right people find the awesome stuff youโre already making.
And remember, pick the places that feel exciting, not exhausting, and build your little corner of the cosplay internet one post at a time. ๐ฆโจ
โณ 3. Batch Your Content
Letโs be real, creating cosplay content every day sounds great in theoryโฆ until youโre tired, in pajamas, and havenโt even untangled your wig. ๐งต๐
Thatโs where batching comes in.
Itโs not just a time-saver, itโs a sanity-saver. ๐
๐ฌ What Is Batching?
Batching means creating multiple pieces of content in one session so you can spread them out over time. Instead of constantly scrambling to post, you work ahead, film, photograph, write, and plan while you’re in the creative zone.
Think of it like meal prepping for your creative brain. ๐ฑ A little work now means less stress (and fewer creative meltdowns) later.
๐ ๏ธ Burnout-Proof Batching
If youโve stepped away or struggled with consistency, batching is your comeback buddy. Film or photograph a few things while you feel good, then rest. Save content for the hard days.
And remember: old content is still valid. Post that 6-month-old cosplay reveal if you want to. Thereโs no expiration date on effort.
๐ ๏ธ Ways to Batch Cosplay Content
- ๐ญ Film multiple TikToks or Reels in one go.
Try outfit swaps, character jokes, progress updates, or trending audio all in one sitting.
Pro tip: Record in batches, then save to drafts for a rainy day. - ๐ธ Take lots of cosplay photos in one shoot.
Get full-body shots, close-ups, prop details, chaotic behind-the-scenes, and even process shots. One look = many posts. - ๐๏ธ Record as you work.
Set your phone up while you paint, sew, glue, scream. Time-lapse the drama. Capture the chaos. That โwhat am I doing??โ energy is content gold. - ๐๏ธ Build a content vault.
Store everything in folders: finished builds, silly outtakes, unused selfies, test shots, messy fabric piles. Youโll be grateful later. - ๐ Write captions or post ideas in one burst.
Open your notes app or a doc and brain-dump caption starters, hashtags, or mini rants. Write when the creativity hits, post when you’re ready.
๐ Repurpose Your Content
One cosplay = a dozen ways to share it.
You donโt need new builds every week, just new angles. That epic armor look? It can beโฆ
- A TikTok transformation
- A YouTube Short
- A behind-the-scenes Instagram Reel
- A tip thread on Twitter
- A meme about foam burns
- A #ThrowbackThursday post
- A tutorial or caption with โhow I made thisโ
You donโt need to post more, you just need to post smarter. ๐ก
๐ Theme Days to Keep in Mind
Not sure what to post? Theme days help keep you on track without burning out your creativity.
๐จ #WIPWednesday
Show your progress, mess, experiments, and mistakes. People love the behind-the-scenes.
๐ก Try:
- Your cluttered work table
- A half-painted piece
- A time-lapse of pinning fabric
- A caption like โTrust the purpose… Hopefully.โ ๐
๐ #ThrowbackThursday
Highlight older builds, con moments, or glow-ups. New followers havenโt seen your 2018 content magic!
๐ก Try:
- First cosplay vs. recent cosplay
- Convention selfies from years past
- โI forgot I did this!โ moments
- Revisiting your earliest fails
๐ฏ Trend Timing
Align your content with whatโs hot right now, and boost your reach.
๐ก Try:
- ๐น๏ธ Posting matching a new game/anime/movie releases
- ๐๏ธ Sharing on fandom anniversaries (like One Piece Day or May the 4th)
- ๐ Celebrating character birthdays
- ๐ Using trending audio while itโs peaking
- ๐จ Timing your post when a show finale airs (no spoilers tho!)
Pro tip: Set reminders for fandom events or keep a โfandom calendarโ so youโre ready to post when the hype hits.
โ๏ธ Seasonal Inspiration
Use the time of year to guide your content tone and style.
๐ก Try:
- ๐ Spooky content in October
- ๐ Holiday mashups in December
- ๐ธ Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter content
- ๐งช Con Crunch check-ins during peak season
- ๐ Valentineโs Day couples or ship posts
- ๐งผ New Year = โglow-upโ year recap posts
๐๏ธ Donโt Forget Conventions!
Cons are content goldmines, so plan ahead to capture moments while youโre already in cosplay.
๐ก Quick Wins:
- Snap selfies with good lighting (hotel window = magic)
- Record 5-second โcon chaosโ clips
- Show your table setup or prep routine
- Ask a friend to record a few videos of you in motion
- Film a recap later: โ3 things I learned at this conโ or โWhat Iโll do differently next timeโ
You donโt need a pro shoot. You need moments, and those are everywhere if you look. ๐ฑโจ
Lastly…
Batching gives you freedom, to breathe, to rest, and to enjoy your craft.
- It means you can skip a day without guilt.
- It means you can survive con season without burning out.
- It means your content keeps flowing, even when your creativity needs a nap.
Youโre not a robot. Youโre a creator.
Make content that reflects your passion, and protect your energy while you do it. ๐ฆ๐
๐ฅ 4. Document, Donโt Just Perform
Letโs be honest, you donโt need to be a professional filmmaker to make compelling content.
In fact, you donโt even need to be โonโ all the time.
What people love? The real stuff. The quiet moments. The chaos. The charm. The story of how you got there, not just the big dramatic reveal.
๐ธ Returning Creators:
Start small. Document the day you started. Film yourself nervously setting up again.
People donโt need your perfection, they need your presence. Your courage to start again? Thatโs content. Thatโs connection.
๐ก Hereโs the Shift:
Stop thinking of every post as a performance, and start treating it like a documentary of your creative journey.
- That rough draft youโre still editing? Screenshot it.
- That laugh you had when your mic cut out mid-recording? Film it.
- That little dance you did after finally uploading your video? Capture the moment.
- That foam sword mid-primer coat? Snap a pic.
- When your glue gun betrayed you? Film it.
- That emotional high of finally finishing your project? Record a selfie.
None of that needs fancy lighting or a script. It just needs you being you.
๐ฏ Content Ideas to Document (Not Perform):
- โThis just happenedโ updates: tech fails, spilled coffee, or that moment your script disappeared mid-edit
- Before & afters: the rough sketch vs. the final design, the blank timeline vs. your finished video
- Time-lapses: editing, drawing, crafting, scripting โ even just 15 seconds of real-time process
- Progress reflections: โThis part took forever, but I finally figured it out!โ
- Quick tips in the moment: โHereโs the shortcut I always use when editing audioโ
- Thoughts while working: โDid not expect this to work… but it kind of slaps??โ
- Unfiltered reactions to your own stuff: โI hate it. Wait. I love it. No… actually I hate it again.โ
- Setbacks or โoopsโ moments: Because youโre human โ and so are the people watching
๐ญ Real Over Perfect
Polished content have their place, but donโt let that be your only standard. People want to see process, not perfection.
Let them into your workspace (even if itโs your kitchen table). Let them see your trial and error. Let them root for you from foam scraps to final reveal.
Your mistakes are relatable. Your voice is unique. Your journey is valid โ even when itโs messy.
๐งต Bonus Tip: Narrate Your Own Chaos
Try filming voiceovers or captions after the fact. That way, you can add a little humor or reflection once the moment has passed:
- โThis is the exact moment I realized I deleted the wrong file.โ
- โWe call this step: panic, improvise, and pretend that was the plan.โ
- โThe software crashed. My soul left my body. We continue.โ
- โThis is the exact moment I realized I cut the wrong side of the fabric.โ
- โThe glue gun and I are currently not on speaking terms.โ
Lastly geckos… Please remember…
You donโt have to perform for the algorithm. You just have to invite people in.
Content Creation is an art โ and art isnโt always clean, cute, or on time. Itโs scrappy. Itโs sweaty. Itโs real.
And thatโs what makes it worth sharing. ๐ฅ๐
๐ค๏ธ 5. Show the Journey, Not Just the Finish Line
Content creation โ whether it’s cosplay, art, tutorials, gaming livestreams, or videos, it is rarely clean, cute, or on time. It’s scrappy. It’s sweaty. It’s vulnerable.
And thatโs what makes it powerful. ๐ฅ๐
Let people fall in love with your work the way you did:
Over time. Through setbacks. In all its beautifully chaotic evolution.
That blurry mirror selfie?
The messy sketchbook page?
The โI cried on the floor and now Iโm laughingโ post?
Those arenโt filler โ theyโre the soul of your story.
Polished reveals are satisfying… But the process? Thatโs magnetic. People want to see where the magic actually happens: in the flops, the pivots, and the โweโre rolling with itโ moments. Thatโs what builds trust and connection, not just admiration.
Even if youโre not ready to post tutorials or finished projects, the in-between moments matter:
- They show your personality
- They teach something
- They give people a reason to root for you
Youโre not just sharing content, youโre building a story. One people can laugh with, learn from, and come back to when they hit their own โwhy did I even start this?โ moment.
So donโt just show them what you made. Show them what it took to make it.
๐งญ For Creators Returning After a Break:
You donโt need to announce a dramatic comeback. You donโt need a viral post, a flawless video, or a grand strategy.
You just need one honest moment. Something like:
โItโs been a while, but Iโm creating again.โ
โThis isnโt perfect, but Iโm proud I made something today.โ
โTrying again, and remembering why I love this.โ
Thatโs more than enough. And people will cheer you on for being brave enough to show up. I can honestly say, I’m very grateful to those taking the time to cheer me on in this current endeavor working on my website and these articles. You geckos rock!
๐ธ Real Moments That Matter
Every step in your journey, whether you’re sewing a costume, filming a skit, editing a vlog, or simply creating something you care about, is an opportunity for authentic, engaging content.
๐งต For Cosplayers
Share the moments between the big reveal โ the good, the weird, and the wonderfully chaotic:
- โ๏ธ First stitches or fabric cuts
โJust cut into the $30/yard fabric. No turning back now.โ - ๐ Sketches or mockups
โThis is what I think itโll look like. Manifest with me.โ - ๐งผ Cleaning your workspace
โNothing says โIโm backโ like finally finding the floor.โ - ๐ซ The โI hate thisโ phase
โWhy do I do this to myself?? (Again.)โ - ๐ช Fixing or pivoting mid-build
โSoโฆ I made the sleeve backwards. Weโre rolling with it.โ - ๐ง Lessons learned
โThis pattern piece nearly ended me, but hereโs what I figured out.โ - ๐ฆ Celebrate small wins
โFinished one piece! Screamed into the void! Progress!โ
๐ฌ For All Content Creators
Whether you make videos, art, tutorials, memes, or mini vlogs โ this is the kind of content that connects:
- ๐๏ธ Planning or scripting sessions
โThis outline makes sense… right???โ - ๐ฅ Setting up your camera or gear
โYes, this is being held together with washi tape and hope.โ - ๐ง Recording awkward takes or bloopers
โThis is the 8th time Iโve tried to say that sentence.โ - ๐จ Work-in-progress shots
โSheโs ugly but sheโs trying!โ - โ๏ธ Sharing what didnโt work (and why)
โThis post flopped but taught me something important.โ - ๐ Behind the scenes of returning
โFirst time posting in months. My vibe? Nervous but hopeful.โ - ๐งก Micro wins
โPosted something. Didnโt delete it. Kind of proud.โ
Your real moments โ not just the polished ones โ are what help people see you. Youโre not just building a feed. Youโre building connection. ๐
โ๏ธ 6. Content Ideas Bank
Staring at your phone like it owes you creative inspiration? Yeahโฆ same. ๐ตโ๐ซ
Sometimes the hardest part of content creation is figuring out how to say โIโm backโ โ especially when the vibes are weird and perfectionism is loud.
So hereโs a gentle start / restart kit:
๐ชด Soft (Re-)Entry Content Prompts
No pressure. No polish required. Just a little push to help you start sharing again, at your pace, in your voice.
- โItโs been a minute, but Iโm back. Hereโs what Iโm working on. ๐โ
- โI ghosted this appโฆ but not my love for cosplay.โ
- โNot perfect. Not trending. Just me, making stuff and feeling proud of it today.โ
- โTrying again โ and remembering why I fell in love with this hobby in the first place.โ
โจ Pro tip: Post what feels real. Skip what doesnโt. Your return doesnโt have to be a production, it just has to exist.
๐งต WIP (Work in Progress)
Let your audience follow your journey from the ground up!
- Fabric hauls + why you chose each material
- Time-lapse of cutting patterns
- First test fit (awkward mirror selfies count)
- Mid-build updates: “It doesnโt look like much yetโฆ but I believe in her.”
- โStill not done but LOOK AT THIS! ๐ญโจโ
๐ญ Transformations & Makeovers
People love the glow-up. Bonus points for messy-to-glam transitions.
- No wig โ wig reveal
- No makeup โ full cosplay face
- Armor assembly progression
- โFrom trash pile to final bossโ videos
- Before coffee vs. after coffee in cosplay โ๐น
- Closet cosplay challenge (using what you already have)
๐ Educational Content
Your experience is valuable โ share it!
- โHow I made thisโ (wings, props, weathering effects)
- Quick sewing or crafting hacks
- How to use specific tools (heat gun, fabric glue, rotary cutter)
- Budget-friendly cosplay tips
- Convention prep advice
๐ง Skits, Memes,
& Relatable Humor
Make ’em laugh and theyโll stick around.
- Your character doing normal tasks (grocery shopping in armor?)
- โWhat people think your content is vs. what it actually isโ
- Fails with funny captions
๐ฌ Behind-the-Scenes Chaos
The magic happens in the mess. Let people see it.
- Craft room tour (real or chaotic)
- Packing before a convention
- What itโs like prepping for a shoot
- Con setup, teardown, or morning-of madness
- Techincal difficulties.
- Day in the life of a content creator.
๐งณ Lifestyle & Personal Vibes
Let followers see more of YOU.
- โจ Get Ready With Me (GRWM)
- Morning routine
- โWhatโs in my bag?โ checklist
- Mini vlog: a day in your life as a content creator.
๐ธ Evergreen and Filler Posts (Yes, they count!)
These can keep your feed active without needing fresh photos every time.
- ๐๏ธ Throwback Thursday photos
- ๐งช #WIPWednesday chaos
- โ๏ธ Flat lay of tools/materials
- ๐ฃ Announcements for upcoming builds or events
- ๐ Polls: โWhat should I make next?โ or โWhich version of this character?โ
- ๐ Cosplay tips you wish you knew when you started
- ๐ฅฒ โWhen you realize you hot-glued the wrong side (again)โ meme
๐ Pro Tip: Reuse and Recycle
Turn one build into 6+ posts by:
- Posting sneak peeks, then full reveals
- Sharing individual pieces or props
- Reposting older content with new captions
- Using photos across multiple platforms in different formats
You donโt need to reinvent the wheel every time you post, just spin it in a new way. ๐ And remember: content doesnโt have to be โviralโ to be valuable.
๐ง 7. Helpful Mindset Reminders
Letโs get one thing straight: content creation isnโt a sprint โ itโs a glitter-covered marathon with tangled cords and too many browser tabs. ๐ฅดโจ
Youโre not just building costumes โ youโre building confidence, creativity, and connection.
๐ For the Creators Coming Back:
Burnout wasnโt your ending… it was a plot twist! A messy, necessary chapter that showed you what wasnโt workingโฆ so you can write something better now.
Thereโs no need to โbounce back.โ Youโre already moving forward, slower maybe, but wiser, softer, and with better boundaries this time. Build gently. Post intentionally. Let joy lead the way.
And when the algorithm is weird, your post flops, or your hot glue gun turns on you like a vengeful spirit?
Here are a few truths to hold onto:
โ Done > Perfect
Perfection is a trap.
Your post doesnโt need to be flawless, edited to cinematic perfection, or trend-ready to be worth posting.
If you keep waiting until itโs โperfectโโฆ youโll never hit publish.
Post the slightly blurry photo. Share the chaotic behind-the-scenes. Let people see you trying.
Messy progress is still progress.
๐ Consistency > Burnout
You do not need to post every single day.
Itโs way better to post 2โ3 times a week consistently than to overwhelm yourself trying to feed the algorithm daily.
Set realistic expectations โ and schedule breaks the same way you schedule builds. ๐ง ๐
Your creativity needs rest to thrive. Recharge, donโt retreat.
๐ฌ Be a Fan, Not Just a Creator
If you want engagementโฆ give engagement.
- Leave kind comments on other creatorsโ posts
- Share cosplay inspo on your stories
- Hype up someoneโs armor build or wig work
- Answer comments on your posts with love
Not only does this build a stronger community, but it reminds you that this space is supposed to be fun and connected โ not a one-sided performance. ๐ค๐
๐ Celebrate Every Milestone (Big or Small)
- Your first post? ๐
- 10 followers? ๐ฅณ
- Your first like from someone you donโt know IRL? ๐
- Finished editing your first video? POP OFF ๐
If it mattered to you, itโs worth celebrating.
Treat every step forward like a win โ because it is.
๐งฑ Donโt Stack Your Worth on Metrics
Likes arenโt love. Follows arenโt friendship. Views arenโt validation. Those numbers fluctuate for all kinds of mysterious reasons โ most of which have nothing to do with your skill or value. You are so much more than your most recent analytics report.
๐ช Be Honest With Yourself
Ask:
- โAm I creating what I loveโฆ or just what I think will perform well?โ
- โDo I feel proud of what Iโm sharing?โ
- โIs this sustainable for me?โ
- โWould I still make this even if no one saw it?โ
Your answers may shift over time, and thatโs okay. What matters is staying true to your passion.
๐ฌ And Yesโฆ Sometimes the Content Isnโt Great Yet โ And Thatโs Okay
Being honest with yourself means recognizing when your content might need work. Maybe the lightingโs off. The audioโs fuzzy. The message doesnโt land. Or itโs justโฆ not connecting.
That doesnโt mean youโre not good, it means youโre growing. Every creator starts somewhere. And every polished post you admire? It probably began with someone filming on an old phone, under a ceiling fan, mumbling into a dollar-store mic. I had a crappy webcam on my laptop I used. It was rough…
But honestly friends, you donโt need to be perfect to start. If you keep showing up, you will get better, and your content should grow with you.
The truth is: for short-form or relatable posts, most people are forgiving. But for livestreams, tutorials, or long-form videos, poor lighting, muddy audio, or unclear delivery can lose viewers fast, even if your ideas are solid.
And once you’re starting to get real opportunities, not just โweโll send you a product to post,โ but actual paid sponsorships, event invites, subscriber income, or brand collaborations, thatโs your cue to invest in yourself and your setup.
Not because the algorithm demands it, but because your work deserves support. Again, this isnโt about chasing perfection. And having the best gear means nothing if your content isn’t good. A $2,000 camera wonโt fix a post with no story, no clarity, or no heart. SO MANY PEOPLE FALL FOR THIS… REMEMBER IT!
This is about respecting your potential, serving your audience well, and building toward something that reflects how far you’ve come. So yes, post the blurry photo. Share the chaotic clip. Be proud of your messy progress. But donโt stop there.
Start asking:
- Is my message clear and engaging?
- What do I admire in other creators, and how can I apply it?
- Am I building a space Iโd want to follow?
- How can I make my content better?
Wanting to improve doesnโt mean your past content was a failure. It means youโre evolving, and thatโs the point.
Your future self will thank you, not just for startingโฆ but for daring to level up. ๐
๐ Final Pep Talk
You are not behind.
You are not too late.
Youโre not โcringe,โ or if you are, itโs in the โthis has 3 views and 2 of them are meโ kind of way. ๐๐
Youโre creating. Youโre sharing. Youโre showing up! Even when itโs overwhelming or confusing or feels like yelling into the algorithm void.
Thatโs not just cool. Thatโs brave, and itโs something to be proud of.
So post the thing. Let it be imperfect. Let it be real. Let it be you. Mess up. Learn. Try again, and donโt be afraid to do it with more glitter, less shame, and maybe a slightly better camera angle. ๐ (But don’t overdo it with the glitter… It’s a nightmare to get out of… ANYTHING…)
And hereโs some gentle but honest truth:
If you want to take this seriously, if your dream is to turn content creation into something professional, you need to start showing up like a professional when it matters.
That means:
- Communicating clearly
- Respecting deadlines (even the ones you set for yourself)
- Carrying yourself with integrity at all times in public, online, and behind the scenes
And when things go sideways (because they will) choose growth over gossip. Growth over ego. Growth over perfection. Check out my blog on how to be a great guest at a show!
๐ฌ Before You Rant About a Convention โ Hereโs What Being a Guest Really Means ๐ญ
That doesnโt mean pushing through at the expense of your health. Quite the opposite. If this is your career path, your mental well-being is part of the job. Make sure to:
- Rest when you need to.
- Set boundaries.
- Get support.
- Then reflect, reset, and come back stronger.
So rest when you need to. Set boundaries. Get support. Reflect. Reset. Come back stronger. Don’t be afraid to try new and different things. Because this space needs more creators who are both passionate and grounded.
Here’s a little storytime about how creators need to understand before growing large.
And let me be absolutely clear:
I ,100% believe anyone can make a living doing content creation.
Because content creation isnโt just posting. Itโs storytelling. Itโs business. Itโs connection. Itโs art. And you, my chaotic little gecko, are capable of doing it all, in your own time, in your own way.
You’re not behind, youโre just at the start of a new chapter.
So post your passion, embrace a little chaos, and build something you’re proud of.โจ
Mahalo and aloha, geckos! ๐๐ฆ๐
